Intelligent Parking Guidance Systems from MSR-Traffic on the campus of the TU Kaiserslautern

Smart Parking: The focus is on time-saving parking and environmental awareness.

Kaiserslautern with its Technical University radiates international flair.

The only technical-engineering university in Rhineland-Palatinate, near France and Luxembourg, attracts young people from all over the world.

It offers more than 100 practical- and future-oriented courses of study. Almost 15,000 students and 2,500 teaching and administrative staff work in the campus each year.

The parking situation can be expanded accordingly.

Together with MSR-Traffic, manufacturer of intelligent parking guidance systems, a pilot project has been launched, which is intended to significantly reduce search traffic in front of the campus buildings and to save time.

The first installation of the parking spaces counting system with digital display of remaining spaces has been completed and is very welcome by the students.

After a successful test phase, the MSR-Traffic Parking Guidance Systems will be used on the entire campus.

The use of MSR induction loops and the visualisation of the dynamic display of residual spaces via MSR traffic signs (type: ParkGard® RoadSign Display LED-S3) enables correct single space detection in outdoor areas.

The induction loops are embedded in the road surface. If a parking space is occupied, the car is detected immediately, and the occupancy signal is passed on to the server.

The evaluation is then carried out in combination with a parking guidance system, e.g. with the ParkGard® Control Center (PGCC) from MSR-Traffic.

Communication between hardware and software is carried out via Modbus-RS-485/TCP-IP.

The PGCC is responsible for the:

  • control of the parking guidance system
  • storage of historical data
  • compilation of statistics
  • visualisation of the current operation
  • communication with other systems

All configuration data, parking data and statistics are stored in a SQL database.

The PGCC works as a web server and can be operated worldwide on any PC via web browser.

Another important detail is the possible integration of a compatible gas warning system for parking garages to protect people and installations.

Smart Parking for Climate Protection

Shorter search time for unoccupied parking spaces for students of the TU Kaiserslautern can also contribute to environmental improvement.

"With Smart Parking up to 900,000 tons of CO2 could be saved. Intelligent solutions are still being used too little - although the savings potential is enormous. The search for parking spaces can also be made easier with apps. Consistently implemented, Smart Parking can make a considerable contribution to climate protection", according to the Tagesspiegel Berlin (German newspaper), at the beginning of the year.
